Week 3 Story: The Land of the Giants

 The Land of the Giants

The story begins with a proud warrior by the name of Octavio and his crew on a journey. Octavio had heard of a foreign place by the name of The Land of the Giants. He and his crew took 4 days to arrive there by ship. The only knowledge Octavio had of the Giants was that they were known to be aggressive and that they did not believe in labor. He also knew that they spent the majority of their time in caves and they have no general regard for their neighbors. The lifestyle of a giant did not require them to have transportation. Octavio noticed when he arrived how fertile the land they were on was and that a place like this would yield great harvests. The arrival at the land of the giants took many days and it was already pitch black, so Octavio and the crew decided to sleep where they landed. Octavio and his crew woke up ready to explore and knowing they needed food decided to hunt the foreign lands. While exploring they noticed a herd of wild boar and soon after the boar had notice Octavio and his crew. The boar started charging Octavtio but thanks to the gods they procured food for the next three days. Octavio and his crew feasted and drank until it was time to sleep. The next morning Octavio called upon the gods to guide him to some sort of treasure. As Octavio began to explore the lands even further than before they heard a peculiar noise up ahead. The noise was coming from the cave at the end of the shore and it was a snore like no other. When they arrived at the entrance of the cave they noticed a sleeping giant and just behind him a treasure chest filled with gems and gold.

Authors Note: For this story, I decided to take the original story of Odysseus and his arrival at the Land of the Cyclopses and make it my own. In the original story, Odysseus and his crew arrive at the land and end up exploring it. Odysseus during one night had killed a herd of goats send at him by some Nymphs. Odysseus also explored the lands further and found a cave with a Giant. Where I decided to change the story is with the characters as well as the plot. I left the story on a cliffhanger as in the next one I might send Octavio and his crew into battle against the giant they found.

  1. Hi Wesley!
Great story! I have never read the original story, or maybe I did in high school. I want to know how the story ends, you should write a sequel! I loved the details in the story and the progression of the character, Octavio. My only suggestion would be adding paragraphs, as a block of text makes it a little more difficult to read.

  2. Nice work, Wesley.
I too read Homer's Odyssey for week 3 and wrote a blog post inspired by it (here it is if you're interested https://mythchris.blogspot.com/2021/02/week-3-story-homers-honda-odyssey.html), the main difference being my story focused on the very end when the crew is nearly back to Ithaca. So, I was very pleased to see that your story focused on a different portion earlier on in the journey. I am hoping to see a second part to this one as I'm enjoying reading your alternate Odyssey as if it is the sequel to my alternate story, meshing the two together! I particularly liked the descriptiveness in describing the cyclops' lifestyle and in providing imagery for the land. I am very curious as to what is going to happen next to Octavius and crew - I suppose they will go for the treasures, waking up the cyclops and making him angry in the process.
