Part B: The Two Brothers

  • There were two brothers Anpu was the eldest and the younger was Bata
  • Anpu had a house and wife
  • Bata live with him like his own son and made garments for him
  • Bata drove the oxen to the field, ploughed the land, and harvested the grain 
  • He worked tirelessly but his equal has yet to be found in the lands of Egypt
  • Every morning Bata tended to the oxen, fed them, and even provided milk and herbs for his brother and his wife
  • Bata rested with the cattle and slept inside the,
  • Bata was the first to rise in the morning and baked bread for Anpu and carried his portions to the field
  • Bata understood the cattle and they were known to be noble animals
  • Anpu decided it is time to plough the lands as the Nile flood had happened
  • As Anpu requested Bata did exactly that, the next morning both brother labored the fields together
  • Anpu requested that Bata procure some seed
  • Bata went to the house and asked the wife to get the seeds while she was working on her hair
  • The wife said you go yourself if she were to do it her hair would be messed up
  • Bata went to the storeroom and grabbed a large basket of seed
  • He carried the seed out and the wife was mesmerized by the amount he could carry
  • She felt a certain way about him and Bata replied that I regard you as my mother and that she has spoken evil words
  • Bata went back to the fields
  • When bata and anpu returned the wife was lying there as if she had been attacked
  • Anpu asked what was wrong and she lied and said Bata had said the opposite of what he had told her and that he struck her
  • Anpu was infuriated and sharpened a dagger to slay young Bata
